The Mechanic and the Gardener

The difference between conventional allopathic or “Western” medicine and more holistic therapies like Traditional Chinese Medicine is often described using the metaphor of the mechanic and the gardener. The idea is that Western medicine treats the body like a complex machine, with interconnected but essentially separate component systems and parts. When something goes wrong in your body, you’re usually referred to a specialist who identifies and fixes the broken part, much like a mechanic does with your car. By contrast, Traditional Chinese Medicine and other holistic systems view the body more like an ecosystem or a garden. Holistic practitioners attempt to cultivate health by creating conditions for the entire system to thrive.

So which approach do you need, the mechanic or the gardener? The answer is that it depends! In some cases, the mechanistic approach is exactly what’s needed and can yield quick results. Classic examples would be a broken bone or an acute infection; by all means, get yourself to an MD for some emergency care! On the other hand, when things don’t feel quite right in your body but your doctor insists there’s nothing wrong, try a more holistic approach! Treatments like acupuncture can help restore balance in your body, and may prevent more serious conditions from developing.

Of course, it’s not always so black-and-white. For most chronic illnesses, I’d recommend using both conventional and complementary modalities- mix and match until you find a combination that works for you. And remember, tending to your health with acupuncture is a lot like tending a garden; consistent attention over time will yield the best results.
